Songs of the Silver Screen

The Top 4 were mentored by Jamie Fox this week and their theme was to take songs from the movies. Jamie had some interesting strategies to help the contestants.
First, he had t-shirts made---one with the word 'contestant' and the other with 'artist' on it. The idea was that Jamie would give one or the other of the t-shirts to them, depending on the quality of their performance.
Second, he would get really close to their faces while they were rehearsing, figuring that if they couldn't perform with him in their personal space, then they can't perform in front of millions of people.
For the most part, these methods worked well as I found the performances very strong tonight, but there are still one or two that stand above the rest.
Lee Dewyze took his song from 1995's 'Batman Forever'--'Kiss from a Rose' by Seal. I liked it: Lee is one of my favorites but the judges were a bit hard on him.
Then Michael Lynch did Michael Jackson's 'Will you be There' from the movie 'Free Willy'. Again, the judges were a little less then positive, but I thought he did a great job.
Next, a rare treat: a duet performed by Lee and Crystal. The judges were thrilled with this performance and mentioned a hit single of it in the future. Their voices are very well suited to each other and Crystal admitted that she has a 'musical crush' on Lee and has had since the auditions in Chicago. Of course Ryan jumped all over that, but Crystal hosed him down.
From the movie 'The Graduate', 'Mrs Robinson' was performed by Casey James amongst a lot of loaded comments from the judges about him and Kara. Simon was very confused: he's never heard of the song or the movie. I think Casey did well and I'm still not sure exactly what the judges thought as it was more about giving Casey a hard time about him and Kara than about his performance.
If I had to pick the weakest player tonight, it would have to be Casey James because Crystal's take on Kenny Loggins’ song, 'I'm All Right' from Caddyshack was pretty stellar in comparison. If we were counting duets into the judging, however, Casey and Michael's would be way up there.
Adding the duets to tonight's show was a brilliant way to fill up time and I hope they do the same in the remaining shows.
Tomorrow night is another elimination round and then we are down to the Top three. Apparently, 'Daughtry' and 'Bon Jovi' will be performing.
See you tomorrow, Idol fans!
