Arts & Entertainment

By Jill Berry

It was an intense, emotional episode of Idol tonight, for the contestants and the fans as they awaited the fate of their favourite singers.

Ryan Seacrest didn't waste any time, as he took Casey James, Aaron Kelly and Andrew Garcia to centre stage after the first commercial break. Breaking the news quickly and succinctly, he sealed Andrew's fate and announced his departure from the show. I was surprised--I thought Aaron might be more likely to go.

Getting back to some more positive entertainment, we heard from Brooke White and Justin Gaston. The song was a bit 'sleepy' for me but it was nice to hear from Brooke again.

The rest of the clan is led up to stage and Ryan agonizingly speaks to them all individually before letting us know that Crystal Bowersox, Siobhan Magnus and Lee Dewyze are safe till next week---leaving Tim Urban, Micheal Lynch and Katey Stevens to suffer through another commercial break and a song from Adam Lambert.

Adam entertained us with a dramatic, smoke-filled, laser-lighted performance showcasing his hit single, 'Whattya Want from Me' from his re-mixed EP 'For Your Entertainment.'

Finally the wait is over, and we learn that Katie Stevens will be leaving the show as well.

Many of you, I'm sure, have at one time or another been in a similar situation where you go someplace new that limits your social life and interaction with only a select group. Something like summer camp, Youth Retreats, Rehabilitation Centres and the like. Your time there is long enough to form special bonds with new people but short enough that the ending is welcome for one reason and dreaded for another. You know that you will never forget that person or persons or the place you met them for the rest of your natural life.

I suspect that the contestants on Idol feel the same intensity of feelings for their fellow competitors, and that's why they all cry when one of them leaves. I've been in a similar situation more than once in my short life, so I find myself crying right along with them every Wednesday night.

Cheers to a fun and safe weekend! See you next week.
