Didgery-dos and bagpipes
| Arts & Entertainment |
Tonight's show was more entertaining and moving than any show this season, so far. From different instruments to constructive, positive comments from the irascible Simon and talented, moving performances from the contestants, I’ve never enjoyed Idol more.

The Top 9 had to pick songs from the Lennon/McCartney 'Song Book' as tonight's theme. The timeless genius of these songs proved to be one of the best draws to date---I had a hard time finding a 'thorn' amongst the 'roses'.
Aaron Kelly had a slow and shaky start to the evening with 'A long and Winding Road' but the judges are still some of his biggest fans as he's really consistent week to week.
If you've kept up with my articles, I haven't been the biggest supporter of Katie Stevens. She isn't the worst of the bunch but she's had some bad weeks. Tonight, however, was definitely her best performance for me and apparently the judges as well. She performed 'Let it Be' with a contemporary twist---it was very moving, and one of my favourites of the night.
Andrew Garcia did well with his song choice, 'Can't Buy Me Love', but it was a bit 'corny' for my taste.
Michael Lynch finally sped things up with his rendition of 'Eleanor Rigby'. Still, I wouldn't mind something really up-tempo next week. His arrangement was a bit weird and dramatic, but not enough for me to remember it after the two hours was up.
Crystal Bowersox, accompanied by her guitar and a 'Didgery-Do' sang 'Come Together'. It was a great performance as usual and I learned about a new instrument too! Very cool.
For a minute there I thought I was at a 'sock-hop' in the '60's when Tim Urban started to sing 'All My Loving' but alas, I was still on my couch. I guess it wasn't that bad and Simon was right when he said that Tim has taken all their criticisms like a man and come back every week with a great attitude and continued confidence.
Casey James really put his heart into his song choice, 'Jealous Guy'. The judges were impressed with him 'showing another side of himself' and 'pushing his limits'. This was another of my favourites tonight, especially when Simon gave high praise---causing a look of pure joy to pass over Casey's face when he heard it.
The best part of Siobhan Magnus' performance was when the strange guy from the audience came up on stage and hugged her. She did 'Across the Universe'. While it was vocally impressive, I found it a bit 'sleepy'.
Lee Dewyze ended the show with 'Hey Jude' accompanied by a guy with bagpipes. Lee always delivers a great performance and his was another favourite. He's definitely a potential winner, if not a popular artist like Chris Daughtry.
Tomorrow's show will narrow us down to the Top 8. Who do you think will be in the bottom 3? I'm going with: Aaron Kelly, Andrew Garcia and Siobhan Magnus.
