Eight is great!
| Arts & Entertainment |
Do you know why 'Eight is Great'? Because it brought us back down to an hour show! In my personal opinion, two hour time slots should only be for movies and a really good season finale.
Katie Stevens started off the night with Kelly Clarkson's 'Break Away'. I thought it was good: not great, but not the worst of the night. She definitely has some 'pipes'! Simon gave her top grades for trying but they all concurred that she doesn't know who she is as an artist yet, so lacks the total confidence and conviction one needs to pull a song like that off.
Siobhan Magnus started her song, 'House of the Rising Sun' by the Animals a capella. I've always liked hearing a good song performed without music when the artist has the talent to do it. Siobhan has that talent. It was a powerful performance that won't be forgotten by the next commercial.
The visually arresting Lacey Brown performed her song, 'The Story' by Brandi Carlisle, showcasing her unique sound and impressing me and the judges. She'll be around for another week, if she’s not in the top twelve.
Katelyn Epperly and her hair did a song by Carole King, 'I Feel the Earth Move'. The judges and I agree that her hair-do out performed her song choice. There wasn't any earth moving in this house and I'll be surprised if she isn't eliminated on Thursday.
Didi Benami 'wowed' me with her version of Fleetwood Mac's 'Reanna'. Already a favorite song of mine, this performance put it over the top. The judges gave kudos to her for rising above last week's harsh criticisms, coming to the stage with a smile and being ready to perform her heart out. Top 12 for sure, people!
The next song was 'Smile' written by Charlie Chaplin and performed by Paige Miles. This was a total 'yawn fest' for me and the judges were as down about her performance as they were her song choice. How does a song called 'Smile' turn out to be so depressing? I'm pretty sure she'll be the second one taken out of the running in the elimination round.
The consistently 'hot' Crystal Bowersox did Tracey Chapman's 'Give Me One Reason' in the performance of the night! She is on top of her game and I look forward to hearing her week after week. Even though I'm not partial to 'dreads', the fact that she hasn't changed her look just for the sake of the show, tells me that no one---not even American Idol---can take away her identity.
Lily Scott ended the night with 'Falling to Pieces' by Patsy Cline. Not Lily's best work, but I still liked it. She's so quirky, cute, and real: it’s easy to find a connection with her. Who else would choose Patsy Cline, make it 'current' and play a mandolin? Only Lily.
Thank you for reading, and until tomorrow, good night Idol fans!
- |2010-03-14 16:38:07 Rocky - I have to agreeI too am looking forward to the shorter shows. They must feel with the longer shows that people will not bounce back and forth between Idol and other shows. I found I was missing parts of Idol because I was only watching it during commercials as I tried to watch some of my other 'favorite' programs, due to the two hour length three times a week.
