The Williams Lake Seniors Village toast Robbie Burns
| Events |
The sounds of the Highlands reverberated today at the WIlliams Lake Seniors Village when residents enjoyed a Robbie Burns celebration. Recreation Director Janet Catalano and Activity Aide Marion Stuart set the stage for the celebration by wearing Scottish costumes, complete with tartan aprons, hand-crafted sporrans and plaid caps.
Members of the Williams Lake Pipe Band, Joe Bazan, Sandy Pellerin, John Visentin and Doug White provided music and entertainment for the event, including piping in and presenting platters of oat cakes instead of haggis.
Janet Catalano did a brief introduction of Robbie Burns and the significance of his poetry and songs. She led a toast to the oat cakes, with a beverage that she described as 'scotch' that tastes a whole lot like apple juice. There was a toast to the laddies, a toast to the lassies and the Selkirk Grace by Doug White.
Becky Hasalhan, Cindy Lightfoot and LeRae Haynes performed three tunes on piano, guitar and voices---Skye Boat Song, Mull of Kintyre and Wild Mountain Thyme. The multi-talented Doug White also sang a rousing rendition of Star o' Robbie Burns.
Several residents attended the celebration with tartan shawls and wraps, and many in the audience said that they had Scottish roots in their ancestry.
The pipers marched in while playing 'Scotland the Brave', played 'Rowan Tree', 'Wings', 'Cockney Jocks', Bonnie Lass of Fivey', 'Blue Bells of Scotland' and marched out to 'Scottish Soldier'.
The festivities ended with a sing-along to one of Robbie Burns most famous songs, 'Auld Lang Syne'.
