Doug Hamm on his Lightning Trike
By Ryan Brink

There were 85 motorcyclists from BC and Alberta in Williams Lake yesterday enjoying the opportunity to showcase their custom bikes, and experience Cariboo hospitality at its finest. A&W gave the Christian Motorcyclist’s Association their parking lot for a bike rodeo with events that included a ‘slow ride’, a bean bag toss, various bike challenges and awards.
Chief William Campsite hosted a steak dinner by Karen’s Catering after the bike rodeo and Alliance Church and Calvary Church both provided meals for the group during their stay. Other local businesses put together welcome packages for the members, including Dairy Queen, which donated coupons for the riders.

Christian Motorcyclists Association started in Hatfield Arkansas with five members in 1975, and was launched in Canada in 1992. The group is now represented in 25 countries and has more than 100,000 members. They attend motor events to promote the club and offer a prison program to offer guidance for inmates and families.

The group has a hospital visitation program to offer support for sick and injured patients and their families. “Our purpose is to promote God’s goodness and try to answer spiritual questions,” stated Canada President Paul Miller.
There is also a separate division for sport bikes and motocross called ‘fast lane’ and the club includes one of Buell’s stunt riders as well as drag racers and a sport bike training school.
Group members thoroughly enjoyed their stay, and said that there was “an unbelievable reception in Williams Lake.”

There were many unique bikes, including Harleys, side cars, big cruisers, trikes and a special side car that hauls a canoe. There were custom airbrush paint representations of Bible verses.
One of the most notable bikes in the group was Doug Hamm’s custom ‘Lightning Trike’ with an amazing 400 hp from its 350 small block Chevy V8 engine. Many of the custom trike’s parts were fabricated in Williams Lake, and Doug took two years and nine months to build it with his son, Tyler.

Since May the trike has travelled through BC Alberta, Saskachewan, Manitoba, North Dakota, Montana, Idaho and Washington.
