Dave Dickson presents community program report to Council

Safer Communities Coordinator Dave Dickson presented a positive and exciting report to city council on Tuesday night as he explained that there were in excess of 2,500 volunteer hours donated to a variety of community policing related programs in Williams Lake in 2011.
The local Restorative Justice program continues to go well, according to Mr. Dickson’s report. Williams Lake is one of the flagship locations for the program, and now has eight trainers who can go throughout the province training on behalf of the program. The program had over 1,000 volunteer hours and handled 47 cases in 2011.
Mr. Dickson told Council that the CrimeStoppers program continues to be very successful. “If we rely on the words of one of our retired Chief Superintendents in the Province, he said that three things that have been most successful in policing are finger prints, DNA and CrimeStoppers.” There were 49 tips submitted locally in 2011, mostly pertaining to drugs, grow ops and other criminal activity.
Realty Watch is a program that was developed in 2011. It is a good tool to ‘get the word out’ for things like missing children, as Realtors are out in the community and are very community minded. There are 40 Realtors locally, plus a partnership has been developed with Northern Realty teams, bringin the number of Realtors in the network to over 200.
Another successful program was Operation Red Nose, the activity was up over last year and volunteers gave over 257 rides to about 500 people. 124 volunteers put in over 750 hours.
The Mounted Citizens on Patrol has been a huge success. They put in over 520 hours of patrolling in the summer months. “The horses will go where the police cars, shouldn’t go,” he said.
Mr. Dickson spoke about the Business Watch program which was started late last year. The goal of this program is to partner with the businesses in town to share information about scams, scoundrels in town that are causing problems, and keep everyone in the loop. “We have more than 100 businesses on board now, and it seems to be going well.”
It is also anticipated that Speed Watch will be getting underway shortly as auxillary members have expressed interest in that program again this year.
