Haggis and harp harmonies at the Celtic Ceilidh
| Arts & Entertainment |
The second annual Celtic Ceilidh at the Legion on Saturday showcased stellar talent from Williams Lake and Quesnel. Hosted by the Williams Lake Pipes and Drums, the event provided treats like Scotch eggs, haggis and trifle and entertained the crowd with music and dance until midnight.
(Gracie Lees enjoyed doing pencil sketches at the Ceilidh to the accompaniment of the Williams Lake Pipes and Drums.)
Two of the performers at the Ceilidh performed earlier in the day at the Medieval Market at Columneetza Secondary School, including Jenna Menzies and Sage Trampleasure, who delighted both audiences with their lively versions of favourite Celtic tunes.
(Jean Wellburn played at the Medieval Market, before bringing her smooth and melodic music to the Ceilidh.)
A delightful feature at the Ceilidh was the Dream Girls from Quesnel enchanting the crowd with a couple of acapella Celtic tunes, followed by a Do-wop medley. Their rich, accurate harmonies accented their musical skills—flawless chord changes, dynamics and fresh vocal arrangements
Nine-year-old Brock Everett joined his grandfather, Williams Lake piper and local cowboy Doug White on stage for two tunes. Brock is both an accomplished young horseman and a new member of the pipe band. He sang ‘When Irish Eyes are Smiling’ with his grandpa, as well as ‘Flower of Scotland.’
Ron Hume was the MC for the event, providing humour and enthusiasm, and regaling the crowd with bio information about the performers.
The Williams Lake Pipes and Drums, the Dream Girls, Mix and Match and Mark Lees collaborated in a joint effort on stage when they played ‘Water is Wide.’ The pipes and drums, featuring Pipe Major Bryan Underwood, Drum Sergeant Al Payette on bongo drums and accompanied by bass, guitar and piano, started the tune, and the vocalists from Mix and Match and the Dream Girls finished it.
The Williams Lake Pipes and Drums are looking forward to the Robbie Burns celebration in January.
