The Williams Lake Food Policy Council (WLFPC) will be hosting its first Local Food Festival in Boitanio Park, October 3/09 to celebrate local food and farmers.  This event is part of the Williams Lake Food Action Plan initiatives to support local farmers and producers, increase access to locally grown and produced foods, grow a viable local food economy, enhance downtown Williams Lake. 

The First Annual Taste of the Cariboo Local Food Festival will feature 250 local food meals prepared by the Gecko Tree and the Blue Spoon, Live entertainment, free activities for families and will be a great opportunity to meet our Farmers.  

With the partnership between the Williams Lake Food Policy Council, BIA, The City of Williams Lake and Community Futures Development Corp.,  the First Annual Taste of the Cariboo Festival - A Celebration of Local Food, will be a great success in promoting local farm businesses, small business month and will be an ideal opportunity for the public to meet our farmers and producers. 

October 3, they will be celebrating the upcoming grand opening of our Community Partnership (BIA, Community policing, WLFPC/Cariboo Growers Cooperative at the Petro Canada site on Third and Oliver and acknowledging our sponsors. 

The Coop will serve as a central place to help create markets for farmers and producers, provide fresh local food for the community, support local restaurants, businesses, caterers and community food programs such as the Good Food Box Program, Farm To School Program, A Food Gleaning program, Root Cellar in Boitanio park, Community Gardens, School Gardens. 

In addition, the WLFPC in partnership with the City Of Williams Lake will be announcing another successful project, the new healthy food Menu at PowerPlay Concession at Cariboo Memorial Complex. 

The WLFPC dove tailed  the “Taste of the Cariboo” festival with Imagine Our Future event, the “Great Adventure”.   Prior to the festival community members will participate in the Great Adventure by visiting 10 strategic key areas and provide input for the new Official Community Plan.  

The first stop, participants will have an opportunity to experience first hand the new healthy food Menu at PowerPlay Concession at the Cariboo Memorial Complex.  The last stop will be a celebration of Local Food at Boitanio Park and participants will enjoy a local food meal. 

The WLFPC has hosted a fundraising dinner and silent auction for the event at the Gecko Tree Aug 20/09 and have another fundraiser, gourmet East Indian dinner & silent auction planned Sept 24/09 at the Blue Spoon restaurant from 6:00-9:00.  

The City Of Williams Lake will offer the first 80 participants in the Great Adventure a local meal ticket for the festival to offer as prizes, as the last strategic spot will be the Local Food Festival to highlight agriculture and local food as one of the City’s 10 priority areas for the Integrated Community Sustainable Plan.
