This week, policing partners across Canada carried out the largest ever co-ordinated investigation into Internet-facilitated child sexual abuse in the country. The investigation, dubbed as “Project Salvo”, was coordinated by the National Child Exploitation Coordination Centre (NCECC) and developed in conjunction with its domestic policing partners. The investigation focused on users that would meet other like-minded individuals and exchange child sexual abuse images online.

Here in British Columbia, members from the Integrated Child Exploitation Unit, Technological Crime Unit, RCMP detachments from Richmond, Surrey, Langley, Burnaby, Prince George, Quesnel, Fort Saint John and municipal police forces from New Westminster, Abbotsford, Delta, Victoria and Saanich executed search warrants for child exploitation related offences.

In Quesnel, two separate search warrants were executed by BC ICE with the assistance of Quesnel RCMP and RCMP Tech Crime Unit. Two men were arrested for child pornography related offences. Both male residents of the Quesnel area, the men are not known to police, and have been released without conditions. No particulars about the suspects will be released unless charges are laid. The investigation is ongoing.

Unfortunately, countless children continue to be sexually abused and victimized every day in Canada and around the world. Often the evidence of this abuse is recorded and displayed on the Internet for millions of child sexual predators to see and collect – forever re-victimizing the child and causing the abuse to continue by fueling the fantasies of these predators.

“The police cannot combat this problem alone,” says Inspector Marlon Dawiskiba. The ICE Team believes that the assistance of the media in particular is critical in conveying the true nature of this horrible crime to the public. These on-line images and videos contain real victims and real children. The ultimate goal of the ICE Unit is to protect children from abuse and investigate people who victimize them. We vigorously continue to work with all levels of law enforcement from around the world, Non Governmental Agencies (NGO’s), the Virtual Global Task Force and more, and our hope is that the public and the media will join us in this fight.

If you know someone that is or has been a victim of child sexual abuse, or anyone who may pose a risk to children, please do your part and report it to your local police department. There are also options to report if you wish to remain anonymous by calling Crimestoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or going to www.cybertip.ca.
