News

At approximately 5:30 pm today, due to an uncontained forest fire currently burning in the Community Lake Plateau area in TNRD Electoral Areas “O” and “P”, Chair Peter Milobar from the Thompson-Nicola Regional District has issued a State of Local Emergency.

Because of the potential danger to life and health at 20:30 hrs an EVACUATION ORDER was ordered, authorized and approved for everyone residing in the following areas to evacuate immediately:

  • from the intersection of Heffley-Louis Creek Road (Tod Mountain Road) and Knouff Lake Road northwest approximately 1.5 kilometres, then due north from along Knouff Lake Road to Sullivan Lake, then approximately 2 kilometres on either side of Knouff Lake Road, north to Martin Meadows Lake including Community Lake Forest Service Road, Finlay Road, the easterly portion of Badger Forest Service Road, and Community and Devick Lakes.

If you are in the evacuation area outlined above, you must leave the area immediately and report to the Emergency Social Services (ESS) Reception Centre at McArthur Island Sports Centre, 1655 Island Parkway Drive, Kamloops (North Shore), Kamloops, BC. All residents must register in person at the ESS Reception Centre in order to receive assistance. Upon registration with the ESS Reception Centre lodging, food services, etc. will be provided to eligible residents.

In addition, an evacuation alert is being issued to notify area residents of the potential for the threat to escalate and create unsafe conditions, possibly requiring an evacuation order to be issued. It would be prudent at this time for residents to prepare to leave this area on very short notice.

Evacuation of large animals should be considered at this time. This evacuation alert applies to the following areas:

  • All properties accessed by Heffley Creek Dump, Sullivan Valley, Vinsulla-Knouff Lake, Leavitt, Josephine, Wilson and Orchard Lake Roads including that portion Walterdale Road lying east of the Yellowhead South Highway No. 5;
  • All properties in the vicinity of Lyons, Huff, Orchard, Coyote and Struthers Lakes.
  • Evergreen Estates and all lands north of the Heffley-Louis Creek (Tod Mountain Road) and east of the Yellowhead South Highway No. 5 from Evergreen Estates to Orchard Lake Road, as shown on the attached map.

This alert may be followed by an order to evacuate, with more updated information on the wildfire. If and when the evacuation order is issued, you must leave your home immediately. A recommended travel route and location of the Emergency Social Services Evacuation Reception Centre will also be issued at that time.
