4,000 Cariboo Chilcotin residents against HST

A group of eight residents of the Cariboo Chilcotin gathered on the steps of the BC legislature an hour ago hoping to meet with MLA Donna Barnett. They made the trip from Williams Lake with the express purpose of presenting MLA Barnett with a 4,000 name petition from her constituents, protesting the HST and asking her to vote ‘no’.
The group was unable to meet with Donna directly, but Larry Day, Vice President of the Cariboo Chilcotin NDP Constituency Association, presented the petition to BC NDP party leader Carole James and asked her to pass the petition to Donna Barnett. “Ms. James will ask Donna to present the petition to the legislature at around 2pm today and if she doesn’t, Carole will do it herself.”
MLA Michelle Mungall from Nelson/Creston said that it would be great if Donna Barnett presented the petition to the legislature herself, adding that the trek by the eight Cariboo residents and the 4,000 signatures show how strongly Donna’s constituents feel about the HST.
“Donna Barnett has said that she will vote for the HST,” she said, “but her constituents want her vote to be for them, not for Gordon Campbell.”
