Bill 27, the Local Government (Green Communities) Statutes Amendment Act, was passed by the Province to amend the Local Government Act to require local governments to include GHG emissions reduction targets, policies, and actions in all OCPs and RLUBs by May 31, 2010.
At the local public hearings, CRD elected officials and staff will discuss the proposed text amendments for OCPs and RLUBs to meet the requirements of Bill 27. In addition, residents will be encouraged to participate in an open discussion regarding Climate Change and sustainability in the Cariboo Chilcotin.
Residents may want to consider the following questions before attending their local public hearing:
· What impacts of climate change do you see in the CRD that concern you the most?
· What is one action you take in your day-to-day life that promotes sustainable living (e.g. turning off the computer at night, walking to work when possible, buying local food)?
· What behavioural changes would you like to make that promote green and sustainable living?
· What role do you see local government taking in GHG reduction?
· What role do you feel local government should not play in GHG reduction?
· Do you understand Bill 27 and the role the CRD is required to play? Do you understand the approach the CRD is taking to fulfill the new requirements?
