Nutrition fun walk/run - get out and enjoy spring

Circle Sunday, April 11th on your calendars for the Annual Nutrition Fun Walk and Run. This free 5km event starts at the Cariboo Memorial Recreation Complex and travels gently through the residential neighbourhoods of the city. It attracts over 300 participants every year and is a wonderful way to celebrate spring. Nutritious refreshments, fabulous prizes and upbeat music provided by our sponsors, make this event suitable for families and friends.
March is Nutrition Month and we are promoting healthy eating through this annual event. Childhood obesity is on the rise as a result of poor eating habits and inactivity. The Nutrition Run is a great opportunity to load up your stroller or bicycles and bring your children along.
There are a number of issues that are having a negative impact on our children’s health including poor nutrient intake, a decline in breakfast eating, increased consumption of soft drinks, high fat snacks , inactivity, a trend towards childhood obesity and diabetes. It is a well known fact that healthy living builds healthy kids and children. Practicing healthy living throughout childhood can create a lifetime of healthy habits and prevent the rising incidence of obesity which can lead to diabetes and heart disease.
It is critical for parents, family, teachers, schools who serve as role models for children to be aware of these issues. To encourage healthy eating and active living, families and role models can begin by eating breakfast and dinner together, making healthy eating a fun choice, focusing on overall health rather than weight-management. We can make a big difference together.
