school_dist_271. Anne Burrill and Kerry Sundall did a wonderful presentation on Communities that Care. Communities that Care involves the Social Planning Council, the City of Williams Lake and the Ministry of Children and Family Development. Positive youth development is key to their proactive approach for their social development strategy. Healthy behaviours, healthy beliefs, bonding, attachment, and commitment are woven into the community. A profile of Williams Lake was presented which was compiled from the Standardized Youth Survey for grades 6-12, demographics, socio-economic profile and other applicable rates. 2. The Amended Annual Budget bylaw for the fiscal year 2009-2010 was read for the third time and passed.

3. The Superintendent provided an update on Full Day Kindergarten.

4. The field trip for band students from Peter Skene Ogden Secondary School and 100 Mile Junior School to Seattle Washington was approved, in principle.

5. The Superintendent’s report included a report on class size averages, which are below the provincial averages. http://www.bced.gov.bc.ca/reporting/

6. The Education Committee passed the following BAA courses:

7. The following policy was revised: 4146 Retirement Recognition

8. Trustee Baker reported on the wonderful science fair in the south end of the District.

9. Trustee Mack reported on the productive meetings with City of Williams Lake Council and local MLA Donna Barnett.

10. The Board will write a letter to the Minister of Education requesting permission to cover our Annual Facilities Grant deficit of $733,866 from our Restricted by Ministry capital account.

11. The Board of Education approved the request from Williams Lake Secondary School to have the Board cover the deficit caused by the over-expenditure of the School Cafeteria in the amount of $9216.79.

12. Trustee Baker reported on her meeting with BCSTA Provincial Councillors. The Deputy Minister was to attend the meeting, but instead chose to attend Olympic events in Vancouver.

13. Trustees Penner, Elliott and Rodier, along with District Staff attended 3 Our Kids Our Future meetings out west (Anahim Lake, Tatla Lake and Alexis Creek). The meetings were well attended and informative. March 2 and 3 trustees and staff will attend the last of the scheduled consultation meetings in Dog Creek and Naghtaneqed respectively.

14. The Chair announced that the scheduled Open and Closed meetings on April 8 are CANCELLED. Special Open and Closed meetings of the Board will be held on Thursday, 15 April 2010.
